Diabetes mellitus is a surprisingly widespread disease among the elderly. In fact, it has been estimated that nearly a quarter of long-term care residents between the ages of 65 and 74 have diabetes. Therefore, understanding the causes, symptoms and complications of diabetes is an essential part of providing healthcare to the elderly in long-term care settings.
