Of the more than 5 million neonatal deaths that occur worldwide each year, it has been estimated that birth asphyxia accounts for 19% of these deaths. This suggests that the outcome might be improved for more than 1 million infants per year through implementation of simple resuscitative techniques. Neonatal resuscitation involves interventions, which may include bag and mask ventilation, chest compressions, endotracheal intubations, and medications. Though not every infant will need resuscitation, it is imperative that all professionals working in maternity services be competent in basic neonatal life support measures, including resuscitation. There must be at least one person present with all the skills required to perform a complete resuscitation in attendance at every delivery. In addition, each member of the delivery room staff must be aware of his or her specific role and have the skills necessary to perform that role. |
