A Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) specified by the state or the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Resources must be used for resident assessment. The staff of all skilled nursing facilities must become competent in the use of this instrument to maintain regulatory compliance and financial viability for their facilities.
