Techniques may vary, but the goals are universal: To reduce the anxiety of patients and family members; To provide accurate information about the procedure to both the patient and family based their of level of understanding; Explaining why the procedure is needed; Discussing what will happen during the particular procedure and who will be in the room; Describing sensory stimuli the child may experience including what he or she will see, feel, hear, smell, and/or taste; To teach coping strategies to the child which can lead to; Improving cooperation before and during the procedure; Increasing sense of mastery and control; To develop trust between the patient, family, and healthcare team; To enhance the youngsters post-procedure psychological and physical recovery; To avoid long-term sequelae, such as post-traumatic stress, of a negative healthcare experience. |
