ORC0313 - Positioning of the Patient

This module will help you to develop the basic competencies necessary to position the patient for surgical procedures. These guidelines, along with good communication and OR team coordination skills, will allow you to maintain a safe environment for the patient. After completing this module you should be able to do the following: State the factors to consider when determining the patient\'s position for a surgical procedure. Identify safety measures related to transferring and moving the patient safely. Describe the impact on the integumentary, circulatory, musculoskeletal, neurological, and respiratory systems to be considered when positioning a patient. Describe the purpose of various positioning devices. Demonstrate the correct positioning of a patient in supine, prone, lateral, lithotomy, and sitting positions. Identify common patient injuries related to positioning. Discuss the role of the nurse when positioning the surgical patient.
